Dance descriptions

Ballet

Ballet classes are a common starting point for many young dancers, both male and female.

All of our ballet classes emphasise correct placement, body alignment and posture, alongside correct RAD technique.

Younger students learn; basic movements (such as balance, hopping, skipping, jumping, galloping), age appropriate stretches, basic positions of the feet and arms, the concept of parallel vs. turned out legs and feet, and ballet class etiquette. Students learn ballet terminology, and the stories of famous ballets.

As students progress, a more traditional ballet class format is followed; barre work, followed by centre practice.

Along the way, we all cover topics such as; grooming and presentation, hair and makeup, shoe fittings, preparation for pointe work and conditioning through theraband, wobble-board and swiss ball exercises.

Pointe work is very specialised and is something that we work towards when the time is right. As a general guide, this is not normally before the age of 12 years of age, although there are several factors that are involved with taking this decision including; age, bone structure, technique and training. Please talk to us for specific guidance.
